I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season!
As many of us prepare to celebrate, TIPS is also busy preparing for a number of upcoming programs that will kick off the New Year in January! TIPS is Co-Sponsoring the CLE and Ski Civil Litigation Program in Snowmass, January 2-5. Following that is the 39th Annual TIPS Midwinter Symposium on Life, Health, Disability and ERISA, taking place January 17-19 in sunny Fort Lauderdale, FL. And finally, the Fidelity & Surety Law Committee's Midwinter Meeting takes place January 24-25 at the Waldorf~Astoria Hotel in New York City.
I also want to remind you to register for the ABA Midyear Meeting. Taking place February 7-10 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, TX, this meeting provides ample time to meet and network with TIPS friends, ABA members and local attorneys. TIPS is presenting a complimentary CLE program, Value-Based Billing from the Client's Perspective, which you won't want to miss, along with various social events. Please review the TIPS Midyear Meeting website and schedule to determine whether your general or special committee or task force is meeting. We recommend you register, purchase your event tickets and make hotel arrangements at your earliest convenience.
While we've been busy, we've also found some time to have some fun and enjoy the holiday season. Earlier this month, myself and a few of the TIPS Officers enjoyed an afternoon of bowling with our wonderful staff in Chicago. While I know we all work hard, I hope you are able to take some time off to enjoy the holidays this year.
I wish you all a very safe, healthy and happy holiday season!
Dick Semerdjian,
Chair, Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section

We remain saddened by the loss of Past TIPS Chair, Dianne Dailey, who passed away last month. We are pleased to announce that this scholarship will be funded initially by a very generous anonymous contribution in Dianne's memory.
If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund in memory of Dianne, please send contributions to Mary Ann Peter, TIPS Director, 321 N. Clark St., Floor 18, Chicago, IL 60654 and make checks payable to the ABA Fund for Justice and Education. As a public service program, the TIPS Leadership Academy receives funding through the FJE. The FJE qualifies as an exempt fund under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and contributions to the FJE are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

When Dick asked me to write this column about my favorite memories of TIPS, a volume
of thoughts came to me instantly. Yet, when he said the article was limited to about 300 words, I
was challenged to put what this great organization has meant to me in such a small article. Here is
my effort.
I was humbled and honored beyond measure to be selected as the Chair of TIPS
for 2009-2010. The year held a tremendous number of memories. Candidly, our
programming and committee work was outstanding. I will never forget the incredible party that
was held on Saturday night at the Bacardi Factory in San Juan. Yet, the most indelible memory
of the year was the untimely passing of our beloved leader, Jim Carroll.

The Section holds even more memories for me, separate and apart from being Chair. I have a series of "I will never forget...". First, I will never forget the boat ride in Bermuda
when a woman's pink floppy hat landed unceremoniously on my head, thus creating a friendship
that forever changed two families. I will never forget the 4:00 a.m. car ride from Lake Louise to
the airport with Kip and Sara Reeder. I will never forget the original "JUMP" dinner that started
early, ended late, and cemented lifelong friendships. I will never forget my work with Peter and the friendship that developed from it. I will never forget the ride from Napa with Bill
and Libby complete with the potato chip explosion. I will never forget the trip to Atlanta with
the original team that created the TIPS Leadership Academy and realizing the tremendous
potential for that group to create one of the most life-changing programs of the Section. I will
never forget the friends that I have made along this journey and the magnificent contributions we
have made, individually and collectively, to the profession and to this great organization.
This has been quite a ride, I will never forget it, and I will never forget those with me on
the ride.
John R. Tarpley, TIPS 2009-2010 Chair
