Dick SemerdjianTIPS Members,

It was wonderful to see so many of you during the TIPS Spring Meeting, CLE Forum and 80th Anniversary celebration earlier this month in Washington, D.C. This joint meeting with the ABA Judicial Division was absolutely unforgettable and I hope you found it to be both valuable and memorable. TIPS presented a full-day ADR CLE Forum that featured a keynote luncheon address by renowned mediator Kenneth Feinberg. In addition, TIPS delivered a number of blockbuster CLE programs with nationally known speakers. Our social events included a Welcome Reception, Leadership in Action Luncheon featuring remarks by Senator Richard Burr and 80th Anniversary Gala at the beautiful Library of Congress.

Directly following the Spring Leadership Meeting was the Fidelity & Surety Law Committee's Spring program held in Orlando. TIPS also presented a teleconference that focused on recent developments in employment practices liability and a webinar on trucking case litigation. The Property Insurance Law Committee's Spring program was also held earlier this month in sunny Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

With our Spring programming coming to an end, we now turn our focus to the ABA Annual Meeting, August 8-12, 2013. We will meet at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, CA for valuable CLE, a CLE Showcase program and various networking events. Please visit the ABA-TIPS Annual Meeting website for more information and to register.

TIPS Animal Law Health Fair During the Spring Meeting, the Animal Law Committee sponsored a Free Animal Health Fair with the assistance of the Washington, D.C. Department of Health at the Bald Eagle Recreational Center. Events included dog licensing and free pet vaccinations. In addition, a veterinarian was on-site to welcome questions from pet-owners. TIPS volunteers assisted with pet-handling, paperwork procedures and other administrative tasks. This event was co-sponsored by the Law in Public Service, Staff Counsel, and Government Law Committees and the Task Force on Disaster Preparedness and Response.

Best Memories

space
space

Richard Turbin So many of my best "life" memories are TIPS memories. In fact there are so many it would take a book to list them all! But, here goes: In 1995 about 10 TIPSTERS packed onto the Moscow to St. Petersburg overnight express and at the last minute our Moscow hosts arrived and loaded our train car with vodka, delicacies, and Russian bear hugs to send us on our way. When we arrived in St. Petersburg in the wee hours of the morning we TIPSTERS were quite TIPSY.

During my year as TIPS Chair (1999-2000) I felt like Forest Gump, inadvertently bumping into history while performing my Chair responsibilities. In November of 1999, TIPS enjoyed its first mission to China. As luck would have it, we were the first American delegation invited to visit China after the U.S. bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. The red carpet rolled out by the Chinese hosts was so thick we were practically buried. The TIPS delegation was invited to a lavish state dinner sponsored by the Minister of Justice from Guangdong Province when suddenly banks of TV's were rolled in to show that at that very moment President Jiang Zemin and U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky were signing the agreement inviting China to join the WTO! Our Chinese hosts personally thanked the TIPS delegation for China's new status as a full-fledged leader of the world economy. We felt like the winds of history were wafting around us as we enjoyed our hot and sour soup and Peking Duck.

Richard Turbin The month before I hosted the Fall Leadership Meeting in my hometown, Honolulu, Hawaii. It was a rare rainy day in Hawaii and I felt personally guilty that I did not order up typical beautiful Hawaii weather for my 300 TIPS friends in attendance. Fortunately it turned out to be wonderful day. Chief Justice Ronald Moon invited the TIPS attendees to a wonderful diversity program at the historic Ali'iolani Hale, home for Hawaii's Supreme Court, where CJ Moon and other veteran Hawaii judges and lawyers described how Hawaii's minorities struggled to gain equal access to justice. Then we walked across the street, dodging Hawaii's liquid sunshine, to Washington Place, home of Hawaii's Kings and Queens and later the Governor's Mansion for the Welcoming Reception. Governor Ben Cayetano and First Lady Vicky Cayetano made a surprise appearance and officially welcomed the TIPS leaders to Hawaii.

In August of 2000, I surrendered the Chair's scepter to my successor, Mitch Orpett in of all places, the Dining Room of the House of Lords in London. Mitch placed a crown on my head and wrapped a royal purple cloak of ermine around my shoulders before I gave my farewell speech which, unfortunately, is lost in the mists of history.

I feel so fortunate for having joined TIPS and then having the opportunity to lead TIPS delegations during its early days of peripatetic journeying around the world. Now TIPS goes everywhere bringing its knowledge, wisdom and good cheer around the globe. All TIPS members should join these missions and be part of history. So, these are just a few of my best memories. To know about all the others you'll have to read the book or buy me a cocktail at the next meeting.

Aloha,
Richard Turbin
