The State Bar of California is seeking a resourceful and experienced lawyer with a solid breadth of management expertise to become its next general counsel/chief legal officer (GC). For more position details, click here.

General Counsel's Office
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the bar's in-house counsel - providing legal advice, representation and services to the bar, its governing board, executive director, management, staff, committees, and other sub-entities.
The GC is the bar's chief legal officer and serves in this position consistent with the attorney-client relationship. Key responsibilities include:
  • Managing the OGC's $4.5 million budget;
  • Managing a 20-member staff, including two chief assistant generals counsel and an administrative manager; and
  • Overseeing the retention and direction of outside counsel, as necessary.
  • Active membership in good standing in the State Bar of California
  • Demonstrated verifiable reputation for integrity and no history of disciplinary offences as an attorney or in any other capacity
  • Ten years progressively responsible active experience in the practice of law, including experience in public entity or institutional representation
  • Five years senior management/supervisory experience in administering personnel and budget requirements
  • Master's degree in a relevant field may substitute for up to two years of experience
Compensation Range
Salary $136,948 - $201,590, DOE
