Dear Fellow TIPS Members:
Welcome to the new bar year! Congratulations to outgoing Chair Gary Gassman for leading us through the transition from remote to in-person activities, driving positive change in DEI and Social Justice initiatives. A big thanks to TIPS Director Theresa Livingston, Associate Director Janet Hummons, and the staff for a successful year. Amidst the evolving "new normal," your adaptability has let us focus on serving our members.
This year's theme is "TIPS, the Next Generation." Just like Star Trek, it's about the Next Generation of TIPS leaders and how to best serve our current and future members. The legal landscape is continually changing, and TIPS is proactively responding in many ways. For example, the Law Practice Management Task Force, backed by Thomson Reuters and other sponsors, will offer webinars on the intersection of the practice of law and the business of law. Additionally, we have created a Wellness Task Force, which is vital to supporting members' well-being, enhancing happiness and professional and financial success.
Our dedication to public service will continue this year through our work supported by the Law and Public Service Committee (LIPS). Important initiatives include the Financial Literacy Project, empowering underserved communities and youth to brighter financial futures. Let me know if you’re interested in volunteering for this Project.
The Section Officers are developing a strategic plan, focusing on identity, leadership, what we do best, growth, and resource management, which we will proactively adopt with support from Council and members alike.
Excitement builds for our many meetings and high-caliber conferences, starting with the Fall Meeting in the Bahamas. If you have not registered, please do so here. A calendar of the complete line-up of our many conferences is available here.
Thank you for entrusting me as your Chair. I am committed to serving TIPS and its members. Together, we will navigate the evolving legal landscape, securing TIPS' role in shaping our profession's future. Let's seize the Next Generation of TIPS, leaving a mark on our profession and those we serve.
Warmly,
Loren D. Podwill, Chair
ABA Tort Trial Insurance Practice Section

AJ Albrecht is managing director of Mercy For Animals in the United States and Canada. She joined Mercy For Animals in 2019 as the organization's first U.S. government affairs team member, and she built and led the government affairs and public policy team for three years before stepping into her current role. A licensed attorney, AJ is the immediate past chair of the American Bar Association’s Animal Law Committee, a past chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association's Animal Law Committee, and the founder of the East Orange Animal Alliance. AJ is a frequent speaker on animal advocacy issues and has published on topics relating to our food system, farmed animals, and animal law. Previously, AJ was a legislative attorney with Best Friends Animal Society. AJ shares her home in Southern California with her spouse, two rescued pit bulls, and a continuous procession of foster dogs.
How long have you been a TIPS member and TIPS involvement? I have been a TIPS member since 2016. My colleagues at Best Friends Animal Society encouraged me to become involved, and that quickly grew to my chairing the Animal Law Committee. I was also fortunate enough to participate in the 2019 TIPS Leadership Academy and present a resolution to the ABA House of Delegates.
What do you like most about being a TIPS member? The sense of community and opportunities to expand my network. There have been so many times where I needed a referral or to bend someone's ear about a novel legal issue, and the TIPS membership has never let me down.

Jason Reichlyn is Senior Counsel at Dykema Gossett PLLC in Washington, D.C. Jason represents insurers in complex coverage matters, including general, professional, and management liability exposures. In addition to providing strategic coverage counseling and serving as monitoring counsel, Jason litigates coverage disputes in state and federal courts nationwide, at both the trial and appellate levels.
How long have you been a TIPS member and TIPS involvement? I joined TIPS in 2019 after attending its CLE programs for a few years. Since joining TIPS, I have become an active member of both the Diversity and Inclusion Standing Committee and Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee, including by serving as Diversity Vice-Chair, Co-Editor of the ICLC Newsletter, and Toolbox Coordinator and Co-Chair for the ICLC Annual Mid-Year Program.
What do you like most about being a TIPS member? TIPS membership provides countless opportunities to connect and collaborate with accomplished insurance lawyers and professionals. Attending TIPS programs has been one of the best ways to benefit from members' collective expertise. I'm excited to attend next year's ICLC Mid-Year Program, which will be held in conjunction with the Life, Health & Disability and Insurance Regulation conference for the first time ever in La Jolla, California.
