How long have you been a TIPS member and TIPS involvement? I have been a TIPS member since 2022. My first ABA conference was the Fidelity and Surety Law Committee’s (“FSLC”) 2022 Midwinter Conference in Nashville. While it was one of the first in-person conferences after COVID, many long-time members extended a smile and a handshake to me. Their welcoming spirit encouraged me to become more involved. At the FSLC’s 2024 Midwinter Conference, I moderated a panel discussion on DEI initiatives and challenges within the corporate and legal industries. In that role, I met distinguished and wonderful TIPS members who shared their insights and experiences. Also in 2024, I was selected to join the inaugural class of the FSLC’s Emerging Leaders Program, which allowed to me to meet industry professionals and TIPS leadership. There, we discussed new initiatives and the intangible benefits of TIPS membership. I’m grateful for the connections I have established through TIPS, and look forward to many years of continued membership of this great organization.
What do you like most about being a TIPS member? The best part of TIPS is the other members. They are knowledgeable, diverse, and have a keen interest in tort trial and insurance law. I have attended numerous excellent presentations and read many publications of cutting edge and nuanced law. There is great camaraderie among the members at in-person events, and as a result, I have developed strong relationships with TIPS members across the country. TIPS also provides great mentorship opportunities for younger attorneys who strive to become emerging leaders in the section.

Todd Lerner is a Managing Director and Counsel for Travelers Surety Claim Group in the Hunt Vally, Maryland office where he leads a team of claim professionals, while also handling complex construction defaults and providing legal support and risk mitigation to his underwriting business partners. Todd is a frequent speaker on construction and surety topics and co-authored the chapter on Conditions Precedent to Asserting a Performance Bond Claim in the latest edition of the Law of Performance Bonds. Todd started his career litigating complex commercial matters and securities matters in state and federal court, as well as arbitrations before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority before moving in-house at Travelers in 2013.
How long have you been a TIPS member and TIPS involvement? I officially became a TIPS member in 2023, but began attending ABA conferences in 2015. As a young construction and surety lawyer, I applied for the TIPS scholarship and, as a result, was able to attend the FSLC Mid-winter conference in New York City. I remember being overwhelmed by the knowledge and expertise of the speakers and knew I wanted to be on that stage one day. I finally got the opportunity in 2019 as part of the Mid-winter Surety Program on the Law of Performance Bonds and then again in 2022 and 2025. In addition, I was a member of the FSLC’s inaugural class of Emerging Leaders and am now serving as Vice-Chair for the FSLC 2024-2025 term.
What do you like most about being a TIPS member? I love networking and building relationships with other in-house lawyers, outside counsel, consultants and contractors but most of all I enjoy learning from the best in the business. There really is no other organization quite like TIPS and FSLC.
