Same Commitment, New Name

When you look at something long enough, sometimes you stop seeing it. So, it was illuminating when a newer member of our volunteer-led standing committee asked, "Why are you the Division for Bar Services?" Given our dedication to fostering bar organizational excellence and leadership, the answer, "because we always have been" wouldn't have been satisfying. Instead, we said, "Why, indeed?"

Already deep into strategic conversations about the evolving needs of bar organizations and how we can have the greatest impact, our conclusion was to double down on our core strength — to promote strategic leadership and governance in the bar community. How? Through exceptional leadership training, and by creating and sharing knowledge relating to the significant issues facing bars and the profession. To align what we are called with what we do, a name change made sense. So, I'm delighted to introduce the ABA Center for Bar Leadership.

Many of you will see the new name and likely will think of the ABA Bar Leadership Institute. While we commit to continue to provide exceptional leadership programming, our vision for fostering bar leadership extends far beyond three days in Chicago. We are excited to expand the ways we share our expertise and analysis, and to build your bar's capacity to lead in the profession and in your communities. What's different about us? We're evolving our suite of publications, services, and programs to make them responsive and accessible to bars of all types and sizes. We're exploring new ways to collaborate and leverage our knowledge and collective resources. And, we're building our research and consulting capacity to support innovation and transformative thinking. To learn more about our priorities, take a look at our strategic framework.

The ABA continues to believe that a vibrant network of local, state, national and affinity bars strengthens the highest ideals of the legal profession. Although our name is changing, service is still part of our DNA. Call on us any time for insight, collaboration, connection and support.
