Fred D. Gray to receive ABA Medal

The American Bar Association is proud to announce that it will award the 2023 ABA Medal, the association’s highest honor, to Fred D. Gray, described by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as “the chief counsel” of the civil rights movement. Gray will accept the award at the ABA’s Annual Meeting in Denver in August. The ABA Medal was established to honor a member of the bench or bar who has "rendered conspicuous service in the cause of American jurisprudence."

Gray received the NCBP Fellows Award in 2018 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in July 2022. Gray served as President of the National Bar Association from 1985-1986 and the Alabama State Bar Association from 2002-2003.
