Our Future's So Bright...(we gotta wear shades)

Message from Joe Sullivan, 2022-23 NCBP President 

As this year began, we were coming out of the Pandemic.  There was a continuing need to address serious social issues.  More than ever, we needed to protect and defend the judicial system, the rule of law, and democracy as a whole.  Overall, there was a level of uncertainty permeating everything we did as leaders in NCBP, in our bars, and in our practices.

To address this uncertainty, I championed the concept of Hope Based Leadership.  There is a field of study called Hope Based Science.  It addresses what the impact of Hope is on everything we do.  Applied to how we lead, you have Hope Based Leadership.

Same Commitment, New Name: ABA Center for Bar Leadership

The newly named ABA Center for Bar Leadership, formerly the ABA Division for Bar Services, has the same commitment to fostering bar organizational excellence and leadership. Take a minute to read the name change announcement from Jennifer Lewin, Director of the Center for Bar Leadership, to learn what’s behind the name change and how the Center for Bar Leadership will continue to promote strategic leadership and governance in the bar community.


Cultivating Diverse Bar Leaders for the Next Generation Bar: September 20, Noon to 1 p.m. Central, 21st Century Lawyer Program.

In the past few years in Texas, three metro bars elected their first Hispanic female Presidents. Laura Benitez Geisler was the first Latina President of the Dallas Bar Association in 2019, Amanda Arriaga was the first Latina President of the Austin Bar Association in 2022 and Diana Perez Gomez just began her term as the first Latina President of the Houston Bar Association. Please join us on September 20 from Noon to 1 p.m. Central as they describe their journeys into these leadership positions, and the challenges that they faced, and get their advice on ways bar associations can cultivate and retain diverse leaders.
